Pescara, the city of Gabriele Manthonè and Gabriele D'Annunzio, Vieste and the Gargano with its splendid coastline rich in beaches and marvelous marine caves, Pizzomunno, the Swabian Castle, the fishing huts, and coastal towers, Polignano a Mare with its medieval village perched on the high and rugged cliff, featuring houses and loggias overlooking the sea, and where, on the elegant promenade, stands the statue of Mister volare, and still Marina di Ugento and the splendid Ionian Sea with its crystal-clear waters among the most beautiful in Salento.
What to say then about Matera and Campobasso, two more pearls of our Southern Italy; the former with its Sassi, the Crypt of the Original Sin with a frescoed oratory dating back five hundred years before Giotto, making it known to the world as the Sistine Chapel of rock wall painting. The latter, of Lombard origins, and perhaps already existing in the 8th century with its own defensive walls built on the remains of an ancient Samnite fortification.
The Monforte Castle, the Church of San Giorgio, and that of San Bartolomeo, the Mario Pagano Boarding School, the neoclassical Cathedral internally decorated with valuable frescoes by Amedeo Trivisonno and Romeo Musa, are priceless testimonies of history and culture.
All this, and much more, is what those who participate in the Autogiro d'Italia 2022 will be able to enjoy; an edition that will highlight Southern Italy, which, with the Greek colonies stretching from Calabria to Sicily, from Campania to Puglia, became the cradle of European civilization and more.
An unmissable edition reserved for only fifty teams and their cars; yes, an unmissable edition because culture, history, art, cuisine, and natural beauty have never been so inseparably linked.

Stage 1
Pescara - Vieste
Pescara, on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, will be the starting point of the Autogiro d'Italia 2022.
From there, along the sea we will reach the promontory of Vasto, a beautiful town overlooking the so-called "Golden Gulf", along the Trabocchi Coast. Vasto has ancient origins and collects the vestiges of three thousand years of civilization, testified by ancient towers, fortifications, churches and palaces. Our journey will take us to the Gargano, the "spur of Italy", with its beautiful marine landscape, and in particular to Vieste, a white village perched on the sea, the home of our first stage.
Stage 2
Vieste - Polignano
Polignano a Mare is the "pearl of the Adriatic", a sublime combination of the crystal clear sea
and the cliffs that stand out in the blue with a suggestive and breathtaking overhang, where the trulli and caves find their natural outlet to the sea. Birthplace of the singer Domenico Modugno, who became famous with his "Nel blu dipinto di blu", Polignano fascinates with its historic center rich in Arab, Byzantine, Spanish and Norman traces, such as the remains of the four defense towers that surrounded the ancient town. Polignano will be the venue of our second stage.
Stage 3
Polignano - S. Maria di Leuca
Located a few steps from the square of the Basilica Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae, the Lighthouse
of Leuca overlooks the small town offers the opportunity to admire a fantastic panorama, and is the reference point, today as in the past, for sailors who sail the waters of the Mediterranean and approach the Salento coasts. In operation since 1866 it is the second tallest lighthouse in Europe (second only to the lighthouse of the port of Genoa), the lighthouse of Leuca rises 47 m above the ground and reaches a height of 102 meters above the sea level.
Stage 4
S. Maria di Leuca - Matera
Matera is also known as the city of the Sassi because of the peculiarity and uniqueness of its historic centre.
Excavated and built close to the Gravina di Matera, a deep gorge that divides the territory in two, the Sassi di Matera, districts that make up the ancient part of the city, have been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and are the first site in southern Italy to receive such recognition. The Sassi of Matera are an urban settlement deriving from the various civilisations which have inhabited the area, and in fact, Matera is one of the most ancient cities in the world.
Stage 5
Matera - Campobasso
Campobasso is a city formed by an ancient part of medieval origin, rich in historical and artistic values.
Located on the slope of a hill dominated by the Monforte Castle the city offers a modern and elegant part partly built at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The historic town develops like a fan around the castle, its full of long and winding alleys and stairways, on the sides of which there are houses and stone buildings. A jewel of the past contrasting the new town.
Stage 6
Campobasso - Pescara
The last stage of the Autogiro d'Italia 2022 will lead us to Pescara, the city of departure.
Starting from Campobasso we will cross Agnone, known all over the world because it houses the oldest establishment in the world for the casting of bells, we will cross the beautiful San Leonardo Pass in the Central Apennines, located in Abruzzo, in the western part of the Maiella massif, and the Terme di Caramanico, a renowned spa inside the Majella Park. Pescara will welcome us after having travelled 1,679 km of beautiful roads, seen unforgettable landscapes and experienced moments that will remain forever in our hearts.
Inspiration
We find our inspiration in the great Italian tradition of time-distance-speed races that have been held in Italy since the early nineties.
These epic races featured men and automobiles as key players, capable of writing the history of a uniquesport that saw them race on public open roads.
